Ode to Percy Jackson

Poet Hey all you beret-wearers,

Step into our poets corner. Because we have been thinking a lot about poetry in class, and the release of the New Percy Jackson book, we decided to write a few short poems for Percy Jackson and his friends. We started trying to write Haikus, but the ridgid structure confused us enough that we had to add an extra line.  We call them Haiku + 1.  So sit back, pull on your blackest turtleneck, draw on your goatee, pour a hot cup of Joe and enjoy our Ode to Percy Jackson.

Percy

Percy in danger

uncapping his sword, Riptide

into the battle

Annabeth

smart, blonde architect

her New York cap conceals her

met Percy at camp

but still afraid of spiders

Thalia

was turned into tree

now alive and being goth

Grover

Grover is short and hairy

trapped on an island

wishing for pretty naiads

Tyson

Getting Ready for the Battle of the Labyrinth

P5030002 Hey Half-Bloods,

As you may know we are just a few days away from the visit of Rick Riordan, so I decided that I would jet down to our local independent bookshop to find out more about the visit and see if I could prepay for the new book.

I got the basic information and was told that they expect between 400 and 500 kids!  This is not a big store, so I expect a crazy scene.  I prepaid for the new book and got my signing line ticket.  I was told that the line moves very quickly and they thought that the line would be finished in about two hours.  Can you imagine signing your name for two strait hours?  I do not envy Mr. Riordan there.  Just signing student's yearbooks for 45 minutes wears me out.

So I got the signing line ticket yesterday, Riordan comes on Thursday, and I am in the letter group E!!!  That means they have sold enough books to put me in the 5th group almost a week before he shows up.  I am jazzed about this visit as we are only the second shop he will visit after the Tuesday release of Battle of the Labyrinth.

So if you are in the area come on down and check out Rick Riordan, if you're looking for me I will be in signing line group E.

SMS Guys Read Quotes

Bookmark Hello readers,

As you can tell we are back from our little break and ready to take on the world of reading once again.

I have been thinking about a way to advertise our little club when authors come to visit.  We are lucky to be in an area that hosts many visiting authors.  Next month we will be getting to see Alan Gratz at school and Rick Riordan will be at a local bookshop.

I think I have come up with a cool idea and I need some help from the Guys Read world.  I want to create bookmarks with our club name, our blog site and a cool Guys Read quote.  I have a few early samples and I need you to help me pick the best ones.

Here we go...

  • "Reading, It's not just for girls anymore."
  • "Because potty humor, explosions, death, lasers and sweat need an audience to."
  • "Reading builds muscles."
  • "I read therefor I'm a guy."
  • "The pen is mightier than the sword, but sword fights are pretty cool."

So, what do you think?  Do you have a favorite?  Can you think of something better.  Hit that comment button and let us know what you are thinking.

Guys Read Literary Madness (Championship)

Ember_2 Here we go,

The final match is here!  After a light voting round in the final four, we have a championship match to decide.  So who will it be for you, a pseudo sci-fi series or a humorous mythology set?  Make your voice heard.  Do a little research if you don't know either and decide which series sounds the most interesting to you.

Percy_3 So without any further ado the First Annual Guys Read Literary Madness Championship Match is....

The City of Ember Trilogy  v.  The Lightning Thief (Percy Jackson Series)

Hit that comment button and let us know who should be champ!

We have had a lot of fun hearing from everyone, both on paper and online, so check back in the next few days and weeks and see what other obnoxious and interesting adventures we can fall into.

Guys Read Literary Madness (Final Four)

Farside20114 Hey Madness Lovers,

The final four is here!

We did have a very surprising upset with the number nine seed Far Side Books taking out Harry Potter, 13 to 9.  I thought Harry Potter had the magic to take it all the way, but I guess those crazy one-panel drawings just brought a better game.

Take a look at the final four bracket and leave us a comment telling us who you think should move on to the championship game.  You can also predict the final champion.  Because we are tracked out right now, we are only accepting on line voting so hit that comment button and let us know who should move on!  Final four voting will be open through next Wednesday.  Check back after Wednesday to see who made it through and then vote for the champion.

Brisingr is Coming!!!

200pxbrisingr Hey, do you like the Eragon series?

Well Brisingr, the newest book in the series, is coming out in September 20, 2008. What we know is that Eragon will try to find a new weapon in the roots of the Menoa tree, that Eragon and Saphira will go back to Ellesmera to complete heir training with the elves, and that Eragon will meet a god. Some people say that the last dragon egg will hatch and that either Roran or Arya will become the next dragon rider. Christopher Paolini says that this will most likely not be the last book and that there will be one more book after Brisingr and that the last book will be called Empire. Here is a sneak preview of ‘Light and Shadow’ , the third chapter in the book.

Priced at $27.50, Brisingr will probably attract many fans across the world, and lots of new money to Paolini's bank account.  So, for all you Eragon fans, do you think the book will be a good one? Or might it be a rip-off just like the Eragon movie?  Leave us a comment and let us know what you think.

Guys Read Literary Madness (Elite Eight)

Battle Welcome back bracket junkies,

We have tabulated the votes, combed through the brackets and we had a real upset and there was a very close battle. I hope you know that we are talking about the Guys Read Literary Madness Tournament Smack Down and not what that crazy Dick Vitale is talking about(baybee)!

The Smackdowns are Harry Potter winning over Eldest with 18 votes to six. The Percy Jackson Series completely demolishing the Time Warp Trio with 19 votes to five.  Annabeth must have kneed the crap out of Fred of the Time Warp Trio!

And the upset of Milkweed losing to My Side of the Mountain.  We think that one comes down to not knowing the book...READ MILKWEED!!!  We also had an extremely close battle between the Redwall series and the Maximum Ride series...but Maximum Ride came out on top with 13 votes to 11.

Now take a look at the Elite Eight bracket and send us in your picks.  We will announce the winners toward the end of the week and then get down to the final four.
